How to choose an SEO agency

  • They specialise in your business’s particular niche eg. retail, B2B, consulting services

  • You see an ad for them

  • They themselves rank well

  • They have good and legitimate Google My Business Reviews

What is SEO?

SEO stand for Search Engine Optimisation. Search Engine Optimisation is the process of making your website readble by search engines and AI and engaging to users so that your website will come up high in Search Engine/AI Results.

Side note: AI optimisation is sometimes also called GEO - Generative Engine Optimisation.

Search Engine Optimisation is changing all the time, for example, with the introduction of AI overviews by Google. But there are some good core principals that stand the test of time.

Principles such as solving users’ problems and earning users’ (aka potential customers’) trust.

What types of activities does SEO involve?

The type of actions that take precedence in your SEO activities will depend on the type of business you are. For example, are you a local business? A service? A B2B business? An ecommerce business? A combination of the above?

Ecommerce businesses might spend a lot of time optimising their product pages and getting product related backlinks. Business with a brick & mortar store should spend time optimising their Google My Business Profile, for which the rules change often!

Should I choose an angency that specialises in SEO only?

It depends. Results speak more than specialty.

An agency or freelancer who is dedicated to SEO can spend all their time going deep on that subject.

On the other hand, an agency or freelancer who covers a range of areas may be able to speak more to how various marketing channels can overlap and influence each other.

Questions to ask your SEO agency

  1. What will you do to get my website to rank? (In my opinion, this is kind of a test question, I am not looking for black hat answers here, the provider should be able to explain some logical steps).

  2. How much involvement will you need from me? Oftentimes, to get the best results from SEO, the provider will need some sort of input from the client, whether that’s budget for backlinks, a willingness to reachout and ask for the backlinks suggested or a willingness to update the content on their website, respond to Google Reviews etc.

  3. How long will it take? Hint: Good SEO takes time. I would expect anywhere from 3 months to 6 months to see results. If you want more instant results you could invest in something like Google Ads or Meta Ads in the meantime. SEO is a high-value, long-haul game.

  4. How much will it cost? Find a provider that matches your budget. Beware of those that promise cheap and instant results. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Should I choose an agency or a freelancer?

It depends on your budget and who you gel well with. An agency will usually have an account structure consisting of an account manager and a team of experts such as an SEO expert and possibly a copy writer.

With a freelancer you are usually talking direct to the source and dealing with an all-in-one.
